YAGMAN BLAMES POLITICIANS FOR POLICE ABUSE

Program #318

Videotaped September 28, 2001

From Full Disclosure Archives (Part 1)

Los Angeles, CA— In this second part of a two-part interview on the Full Disclosure Network, Civil Rights Attorney Stephen Yagman told host Leslie Dutton “elected officials should have taken control of the LAPD and seen to it that it functioned properly, without brutality and without corruption.” He said that when they didn’t perform like that the elected officials became legally potentially liable.

In this interview that was originally videotaped on September 28, 2001, Yagman, admitted to filing 1600 police misconduct lawsuits against the LAPD. He also said that the Federal consent decree that was entered into between the City and U. S. Justice Department is a basically a sham. Because the Justice Department won’t enforce it and hasn’t been enforcing it.”

When asked if it was possible to have responsible government in Los Angeles when the City Council is dominated by Democrats and a one party system he said “I don’t know which party, if any, controlled Los Angeles City politics over the past 25 years. I thought it was a mélange of just kind of hacks”. He noted “solving the (LAPD) problem is in the hands of the people whom we elect in our representative form of democracy, the Mayor and the City Council members. They have never done it and they’re not doing it now.”

Full Disclosure interviews over the past twelve years have documented the problems encountered in the criminal justice system from the broad perspectives of law enforcement, judiciary, public defenders and criminal defense attorneys.
